The drama at East High is about to get bigger in season 2 of “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.”

The trailer for season 2 of the hit Disney+ show just dropped and it’s giving us our first look at some of the dilemmas our favorite wildcats will be dealing with. In the trailer, we learn that the drama department was set to do “High School Musical 2” as the spring musical which makes total sense following the first season. But, with the entrance of rival school North High, things go for a loop. Derek Hough’s character, Zack, makes a grand entrance as the ex boyfriend of Miss Jenn and the drama teacher at North High. He informs Miss Jenn that their school will be competing in the Alan Menken Awards for Excellence in High School Theater Awards. North High is doing “The Little Mermaid” so Miss Jenn changes East High’s show to “Beauty & The Beast.”

As for Ricky and Nini, we see that Nini finally tells Ricky she got into the conservatory and they’re trying to make long distance work. However, we see a student named Lily set her sights on Ricky telling him “sounds like your girlfriend wants some space. Let me know if you’re looking for one who doesn’t.” Wow, she is not holding back! Meanwhile it seems like Nini is lonely at her new school and missing Ricky and all her friends. We have a feeling this may be like High School Musical 3 where Gabriella had to leave the show early but swoops in at the end…maybe Nini will decide to come back to East High and play Belle.

The trailer also teases some big dance numbers and many feature Sofia Wylie’s “Gina,” which makes us so happy because that means she decides to stay at East High. There’s plenty more in the trailer which you can watch above. We are so excited to hear the cast sing original songs, HSM 2 songs (hopefully), and some Alan Menken classics from “Beauty & The Beast” and “The Little Mermaid.”

Season 2 of HSMTMTS kicks off May 14 with new episodes Fridays on Disney+. What are you most excited for in season 2?
