Get ready for more drama, music and fun at East High!
Season 2 of “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series” will premiere on Disney+ on May 14 as your favorite wildcats take on Beauty & The Beast for the Spring musical. When season 1 ended, Nini still hadn’t told Ricky she got into the conservatory, Big Red and Ashlyn realized they liked each other and Gina was debating whether to stay with her mom or move in with Ashlyn. So what is in store for season 2?
Well, the East High Wildcats will be preparing for the spring musical and they’ll face off against rival school North High to win a prestigious and cutthroat student theater competition. The season will also feature brand-new solos written by Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett. But, what about music from “High School Musical 2”? Will any of that be incorporated?
“I think for the mega High School Musical OG fans, there are nods and music moments, and there are the winks of the Wildcat East High vibe throughout the season, and I never wanted that to go away,” creator Tim Federle told EW. “But I do think in the realm of the Degrassi franchise and anything that’s able to go that distance as a series, you have to at some point get away from the very original premise and say, ‘Who are these characters and do we care about them and do we want to know more about them?’ Beauty and the Beast is not only one of my favorite scores — the music is so emotional — but it allows us to see these kids cast in roles that might surprise you. And also just scenically and costume design-wise and musically, it’s so different from High School Musical that it’s just a nice way to expand.”
Ok, so it seems like we’ll have to wait and see if any of the other classic HSM franchise songs make it into the new season. Either way, we’re excited for new music. Season 2 will also bring new characters to the show including Derek Hough (as North High’s theater teacher and Ms Jenn’s ex), Olivia Rose Keegan, Roman Banks, Andrew Barth Feldman and Asher Angel.
