Angie Thomas’ powerful bestseller The Hate U Give made a splash at the BET Awards this weekend dropping its first trailer.
The film stars Amandla Stenberg as Starr Carter, a young girl caught between two worlds. She lives in a poor, mostly black, neighborhood but she also attends a rich, mostly white, prep school. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Now, facing pressures from all sides of the community, Starr must find her voice and stand up for what’s right.
The almost 2 and a half minute trailer already felt very powerful so we cannot wait to see the full movie. The film also stars Regina Hall, Russell Hornsby, Issa Rae, KJ Apa, Algee Smith, Sabrina Carpenter, Common & Anthony Mackie and is set to hit theaters October 19, 2018.
