When you graduate high school and head off to college one of the things you’re most excited for is freedom from your parents, right? What if you went off to college and then discovered that your mom decided to go back to school as well at the same school as you, no less? Sounds pretty embarrassing and like a great plot for a comedy movie.
Melissa McCarthy teams up with her husband Ben Falcone to bring that plot to life in Life of the Party. When her husband suddenly dumps her, longtime dedicated housewife Deanna (McCarthy) turns regret into re-set by going back to college…landing in the same class and school as her daughter, who’s not entirely sold on the idea. Plunging headlong into the campus experience, the increasingly outspoken Deanna—now Dee Rock—embraces freedom, fun and frat boys on her own terms, finding her true self in a senior year no one ever expected.
McCarthy stopped by the Ellen show today to premiere the trailer and also talk about making out with her young co-star Luke Benward, which you can see a bit of in the trailer. “Professionally speaking, Luke is amazing,” she shared. “We meet and kind of hit it off and end up in a relationship. There’s some making out in a library stack and we shot that scene on our 11th wedding anniversary on the day. [Ben] was weirdly yelling out things like can you grab his butt in the next take?…It was crazy and funny and Luke just kept going ‘happy anniversary.'”
The movie looks hilarious and joining McCarthy & Benward in the film are Gillian Jacobs, Maya Rudolph, Julie Bowen, Debby Ryan, Jimmy O. Yang, Matt Walsh, Molly Gordon, Stephen Root, Jacki Weaver, Jessie Ennis, and Adria Arjona.
The film is set to release on May 11, 2018.
