It’s a bittersweet day for fans of Freeform’s hit show “The Fosters.”
The family drama will premiere the second half of season 5 on January 9 and this season will be it’s last. Announced by Deadline, Freeform will be ending the show after season 5 but fans will get to see their favorite family’s story wrapped up with a nice bow. Even though production for the current season already wrapped, “The Fosters” will be getting 3 extra episodes to wrap up the story in the summer.
The good news doesn’t stop there! The story will continue for our favorite family in the form of a spin-off series. A 13-episode order has been given to the currently untitled spin-off starring Maia Mitchell & Cierra Ramirez as their beloved characters “Callie” & “Mariana.” Following in the footsteps of “Pretty Little Liars” which saw a time jump, the spin-off will pick up years later as
Callie and Mariana move out and move to a new city, Los Angeles. While living together, they take two very different paths and explore the different sides of the city — Mariana will be involved in the tech world, possibly in Silicon Beach, while Callie will continue the kind of social work she’s done.
“Both of them will be faced with the challenges of working in a cultural divide all the while pursuing their dreams that have been laid into those characters throughout The Fosters,” said Freeform’s EVP programming and development Karey Burke. “It’s really about expanding the universe and continuing the legacy of The Fosters but in a different venue,” Burke said.
The good news about Callie & Mariana staying in California is that the spin-off will be able to see appearances from the rest of the family. “We plan to have all characters from the original series make guest appearances,” Burke said and that includes not just the other siblings but the parents played by Teri Polo and Sherri Saum.
So, season 5B of “The Fosters” kicks off next week and will end with the 100th episode. Then in the summer expect the 3-part limited series event which will most likely set up for the spin-off which doesn’t have a release date yet. While we’re sad to see what we know as “The Fosters” come to an end, we’re excited to see the journey for Callie & Mariana continue.
