It’s a new year and we’re kicking off our year at the movies with a return to one of our favorite franchises.
Insidious: The Last Key reunites us with Elise Rainer (Lin Shaye) and her goofy-but-lovable sidekicks Specs (Leigh Whannell) & Tucker (Angus Sampson) as they take on one of their scariest missions yet. In the timeline of the Insidious movies, this fourth installment fits in between Insidious: Chapter 3 and Insidious yet its flashbacks take us even earlier in the timeline as we learn more about Elise’s childhood.
The film follows Elise who gets a call about about a haunting but this time, everything is different. The haunting is at Elise’s childhood home and now she must return there to face her past demons and family secrets.
I recently had the chance to sit down with Lin Shaye, Leigh Whannell and director Adam Robitel to discuss the film. It turns out that Shaye had created a backstory in her own mind while making the past movies and it turned out to be a little different than what Whannell came up with for this movie. “I saw her originally as a loner. She didn’t have family particularly, she was an only child perhaps,” Shaye shared. “I actually have a little notebook where I wrote a bunch of stuff down, none of it corresponded.”
When it comes to the appeal of the franchise, creator, writer and star Whannell he attributed it to the fact that people still love seeing horror movies in a group setting. “Hopefully they love going to the theater to scream but hopefully at this point they have an emotional connection to the characters.”
I also chatted with Robitel about his do’s and don’ts when making a horror film and much more. Check out the full interviews above.
Insidious: The Last Key opens in theaters January 5, 2018.
