In a world where things are looking pretty grim right now, sometimes you just want to sit back and remember simpler times…like maybe 2007. Today is starting to feel like those good old days as both Miley Cyrus AND Aly & AJ released new music, both acts that dominated our earwaves. While I love Miley, I’m hear to talk about one of my favorite and probably the most underrated acts to come from Disney roots and then blossom to the mainstream – Aly & AJ.
It’s hard to believe that it’s been 10 years since Aly & AJ Michalka put out new music under that moniker. After the release of Insomniatic in 2007 that featured one of their best songs ever, the infections “Potential Breakup Song,” the duo took some time off to take on new adventures like acting (“iZombie,” “The Goldbergs”) and even getting married (Congrats Aly!). Now the two are refocusing on their music with an EP due out later this year and if the lead single “Take Me” is a taste of things to come, we’re in for a treat.
“Take Me” has a fun synth-pop feel with the Aly & AJ touch we know and love. It’s a new era for the sister duo and I are here for it. I know I’m ready to “sink my teeth” into more. So what took the duo so long to get back into music? AJ Michalka told ET, “We just went through this time where we just froze, musically and I’m really glad it took as long as it did, because I don’t think we’d be writing the material we are now if we hadn’t taken that time.”
Aly added, “I think a part of it, too, was being inspired to make new music again. I think we just were in a writing funk, and I think that happens with a lot of artists and some people are better at just powering through it. I think for us, we needed to sit back for a moment.”
All I know is I’m glad these two are inspired again and more new music is on the way. Until then, I’ll be dancing around in my bedroom listening to “Take Me.” You can pick up the song here.
