Zendaya Drops Out of Lifetime’s Aaliyah Movie

zendaya-aaliyah-062914Bad news Zendaya fans. It looks like Z will no longer be playing Aaliyah in Lifetime’s upcoming biopic.

It was announced earlier this month that the 17-year-old was set to play one of her musical heroes but now E! is reporting that she has dropped out of the project.

A rep for Zendaya told E! News exclusively today that “Zendaya is no longer involved in the project.” A source told E! News that there were production issues, including problems obtaining the rights to Aaliyah’s music.

“Aaliyah has always been an inspiration to Zendaya,” the source said. “She was honored to portray her and pay tribute to her. If she is going to do it, she wants to do it right.”

We are a little bummed that we won’t get to see Zendaya play Aaliyah because she was so excited to take on the role. Fingers crossed for the future.

Until then, tune in to see if Zendaya can take home her first BET Award for the YoungStar Award at the 2014 BET Awards, which airs live tonight at 8 p.m. ET. Below Zendaya is also pictured at the BET dinner on Saturday.
