brentonthwaites-taylorswift-090913Remember when reports started flying that Taylor Swift was crushing on Australian hottie Brenton Thwaites at TIFF earlier this month? Well, maybe it was research?

According to Page Six, the 23-year-old singer has joined the cast of the movie adaptation of The Giver alongside Brenton, Katie Holmes, Meryl Streep & Jeff Bridges. Sources said she was offered a supporting role by Harvey Weinstein in Toronto and the deal just closed.

“Harvey introduced Taylor to Brenton in Toronto because they were both going to be in the film,” said a source.

The Giver is based on Lois Lowry’s book where in a seemingly perfect community, without war, pain, suffering, differences or choice, a young boy is chosen to learn from an elderly man about the true pain and pleasure of the “real” world.

The news was confirmed by THR and the movie will also star Alexander Skarsgard, Odeya Rush and Cameron Monaghan.

So who will Taylor play? She will take on the role of Rosemary, the last teen mentored by The Giver before he meets Jonas. Streep will play the Chief Elder, Bridges is The Giver, Holmes will be Jonas’ mother, Skarsgard will play Jonas’ father, Monaghan is Jonas’ best friend Asher and Rush will play Jonas’ friend and love interest Fiona.

The movie set to start filming Oct. 7 in Cape Town, South Africa with a release date of Aug. 15, 2014.
