At long last, we have our first glimpse at Theo James as “Four” in the upcoming movie adaptation of Divergent.
Yesterday, the movie’s twitter sent out a photo of Theo’s shoulder as a teaser announcing that the first photo would be released this morning. Thanks to Entertainment Weekly, we now have the full look.
Is it just us, or does Theo look a tad like James Franco at this angle? We aren’t complaining! We see Four dressed in a plain black shirt and if you look closely at his collarbone, you’ll get a small peek at his tattoo. That is, of course, if you can stop staring at his bicep and tricep.
Divergent is set in a future world where people are divided into distinct factions based on their personalities, Tris Prior (Shaielene Woodley) is warned she is Divergent and will never fit into any one group. When she discovers a conspiracy to destroy all Divergents, she must find out what makes being Divergent so dangerous before it’s too late. The factions include Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent).
EW chatted with Theo on set in Chicago where he joked about the photo, “Is this the picture where I have a t-shirt on and no pants? I was really hoping they’d use that one.” Don’t worry, he is indeed wearing pants in the photo. What a jokester. He did explain that the photo ‘captures a moment from early in the film when Four is showing the Dauntless initiates around their new headquarters.’ “I’ve introduced them to this world and they’re still in the beginning stages of training,” he says. “At this stage you don’t really know what Four is all about.”
The movie is currently filming and will feature some great stunts and action sequences. At one point, they even let Theo take charge of the Dauntless training where he led around 50 actors that make up the core group of background Dauntless characters. “They didn’t know he was playing Four, they thought he was our stunt coordinator,” says director Neil Burger, with a laugh. “He put them through it.”
Theo added, “I know it sounds ridiculous but it was really quite useful: it helped set a tone for those scenes, being able to live the character a bit. At one point, Shailene was laughing and I got real serious with her and said”—the actor lowers his voice to a menacing whisper—”Don’t. Laugh. “hai was like, ‘um, are you joking right now?’”
So, for you doubters out there, are you now convinced that Theo makes a good Four? We think so and we can’t wait for more photos (and the movie of course!). Are you excited for Divergent to open March 21, 2014?
