Savannah Jayde always makes us laugh on “Big Time Rush” but now she’s taking a dramatic turn in her latest movie.
The Texas starlet stars alongside Hollywood heavyweights Danny Glover, Dermot Mulroney, Josh Lucas, and Mira Sorvino in the new family flick Space Warriors which just premiered on the Hallmark Channel and is in select theaters now. She is joined by an outstanding group of rising stars like Thomas Horn and Booboo Stewart as well.
Space Warriors is about a group of young enthusiasts that find themselves defending their place at a special space camp at the Space & Rocket Center. It’s only once the lives of astronauts and cosmonauts some 200 miles from Earth are in danger, that the newcomers and the veterans put their heads together, set aside their differences and work together as a team.
The cast filmed on location in Huntsville at an actual space camp and we are definitely jealous! We chatted with Savannah all about the fun project, who/what inspired her to become an actress, her summer favorites and a whole lot more.
‘Space Warriors’ sounds like such a fun project to be a part of. What was the most challenge part of making the movie and the easiest? ‘Space Warriors’ WAS such a fun project. One of the easiest parts of this filming process was getting along with the entire cast. We (all of the kids) had a lot of time off set to hang out, and we were rarely without each other. We spent our days off either running around the camp museums, or exploring Huntsville. Each of the camp activities posed their own challenge – space camp isn’t meant to be easy! One of the hardest activities was the boat competition. When you see the Warriors struggling to go the correct direction, it’s not acting – we really couldn’t figure it out! Another challenge that added to all the activities was the heat. Alabama summers are NO joke, that heat was unforgiving!
How would you describe Dani? Are you similar in any ways? Dani has a big personality. She goes full out – no holds barred – Â in whatever she’s doing – whether that’s bossing around the boys, or using her robots in a new and innovative way. She’s a little more on the tomboy side than I am, but I certainly went through a similar phase when I was younger. Dani and I are both very opinionated, but loyal to the end when we care about something or someone.
What was downtime on set like? During our downtime on set, we would all end up in one trailer to watch movies and play card games. With the boys outnumbering the girls, we watched a lot of action/war movies. I saw more of Mel Gibson’s movies in that month than I’d seen in my whole life.
The movie has a great cast. What was your favorite part of working with them. Did they give you any advice? One of the best things with this particular cast is how humble everyone was. They were so willing to give any advice, and share stories from all the projects they had worked on.
Which two of your co-stars would you choose to be on your team if you were stranded in space? I’d say I spent the most time with Grayson and Booboo, so they’d be fun to have in space. Although Thomas Horn would probably be the one to figure out how to keep us alive.
Why would you tell people to tune in to “Space Warriors”? It’s the success story of a team of underdogs, filled with adventure, obstacles, and suspense. Along with all of that, it’s a fun family movie and you get an inside look at what space camp is really like. Honestly, who DIDN’T want to go to space camp when they were younger?!
You’ve been acting for a while now. Was there an actor or a movie/tv show you saw that made you say, “I want to act”? When I was younger I was really into sketch comedy and watched shows like The Amanda Show every day. I realized I made up different characters and put on sketches for my family and wanted to do it on a grander scale like The Amanda Show. I wanted to entertain people and make them laugh.
What kind of roles would you love to take on next? I’ve loved my time on the Disney and Nickelodeon shows, but I’d love to slowly move into older roles. Whether that’s moving to ABC Family and The CW or continuing to do movies, I’m ready to “graduate” so to speak. I would also love to do a period piece, that’s always been a dream of mine.
We love you on Big Time Rush. Can you tease what’s coming up this season? Without giving away too much, it’s the most fun season yet! Lots of great music and wonderful special guests. We also had a great season finale full of surprises that I think everyone will really enjoy.
You’re such a great role model for kids and aspiring actors in that you’ve stayed extremely grounded. What advice would you give kids out there today? Well thank you, that’s the best compliment to receive! Staying true to yourself and what you believe is the best advice I can give anyone. It’s a lot harder than it should be, but it’s something to work at every day. Also, surrounding yourself with family and friends is the best way to stay grounded.
Summer is here. What are your favorite things to do in the summer? Spending a lot of time outside is one of my favorite things to do in the summer. I’ve got a great group of friends and we all like to take roadtrips to San Diego for the zoo, and we spend a lot of time at the beach. A lot of my friends like to go hiking and that’s something I’m looking forward to trying this summer.
If a movie was made about your life, who would you want to play you? That’s a tough one! I love Natalie Portman as an actress, so I’d be extremely honored if she portrayed me in a movie about my life. Although if we needed someone that favored me, I’d suggest Jessica Szohr.
Do you have any funny or weird hobbies? Hmmm….not funny…or weird …but I love decorating and of course I LOVE fashion so I’m always on the look-out for unique clothes/hats/shoes/boots and furniture when I’m with friends at flea markets. I LOVE the one at Fairfax/Melrose on Sundays!
What’s next for you? Right now I don’t have anything lined up. Pilot Season just ended so it should get busy very soon with auditions for the new shows that got picked up – the life of an actor – you know, constantly auditioning. In the meantime, I’m enjoying running my style blog and looking for new inspiration. I’d love to start working on another movie as soon as possible.
I also recently became a consultant with Rodan + Fields skin care. Having my skin at it’s best is a big deal to me, and I love these products so much I want to be able to share it with everyone! You can check out my Rodan + Fields website and read up about the products as well as purchase them from there. I have friends that are using the acne regimen and having amazing results so I highly suggest for anyone struggling with this issue. For myself, I have extremely sensitive skin so the Soothe products have just made my skin the best it’s ever been. (Check it out at savannahjayde.myrandf.com)
