The Hunger Games has once again beaten out the competition to take the #1 spot at the weekend box office.
The movie starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Elizabeth Banks took in $33.5 million over the weekend, bringing the movie’s global intake to $460 million. Wow!
New releases American Reunion and Titanic 3D rounded out the top 3 bringing in $21.4 million and $17.3 million respectively.
In other Hunger Games news, reports came out last week that Gary Ross would not return to direct the sequel Catching Fire due to money and also wanting to do something different. Turns out those were just rumors and it looks like talks have started again for the director to return.
According to THR, Ross is set to meet with Lionsgate executives today to determine his role in the follow-up to the mega-blockbuster.
Catching Fire is set to start production in August so that the movie can be filmed before Jennifer Lawrence stars production on the X-Men: First Class sequel in January.
Fingers crossed everything works out. We’d love to see Gary direct Catching Fire.
