With any book-to-screen adaptation, things are bound to get changed or left out that will make some fans happy and some mad. The Hunger Games is no exception to this.
If you saw the last TV spot for the movie, one of the big changes right off the bat was how the Mockingjay pin gets introduced. This, however, is not the only change fans will see in the movie.
1: Madge, the character in the books who original gives Katniss the mockingjay pin will not appear. According to producer Nina Jacobson, “You have so little time to establish these characters. So if Madge has to get thrown under the bus so you can make sure the audience who hasn’t read the books understands the devotion between Katniss and Prim, then that’s what you do.”
2: We’ll only get a glimpse at those silent avoxes. Director Gary Ross says, “We have Avoxes, but we don’t digress in the film. I think it’s a wonderful way to populate the world, but there are just certain [cutbacks] that have to happen.” So it looks like we won’t really get to see the fact that Katniss recognizes one of the Avoxes.

3: We won’t really get to know the prep team as well as you do in the books. We will get to meet Octavia, Flavius and Venia but we won’t really get to know them until possibly the sequel. According to Jacobson, they really wanted to make sure that Cinna (Lenny Kravitz) was established first.
4: Don’t expect to see a lot of the fancy gadgets in the Capitol that are described in the book. That means no food in an instant thanks to a button. “We didn’t want the Capitol to appear too fanciful,” Jacobson said. It has to appear ominous and threatening. The Capitol has to be a mind-blowing experience, but it can’t be Whoville.”
So those are just four of the changes from the book to the movie. We imagine there will probably be a few more, but seeing as how author Suzanne Collins has approved of the movie, we have a feeling we won’t be too upset by these changes.
