12:49 p.m. — Several hundred fans have gathered outside the hotel, chanting ”Jonas! Jonas! Jonas!” or singing Jonas Brothers songs. The brothers say that when they pulled into the hotel at 5:30 a.m., after traveling through the night from a show in Pittsburgh, fans already were waiting. They were told some had spent the night.
As the brothers leave the hotel and enter a luxury van, girls shriek. A brief wave brings even more of a shriek. As the van pulls out, a mob of girls converge on it, making it hard for the vehicle to move.
It is the first indication of the intensity of the Jonases’ popularity. For the rest of the day, any public appearance is done amid mobs of young girls. In most cases, the Jonases seem unfazed by the frenzy.
”I don’t think it’s something you can ever get used to,” Nick says. ”It’s always kind of funny when you walk by and hear just screaming and yelling. It’s just Â… it’s crazy.”
Joe laughs, ”Yeah, at first you think something’s wrong.”
Carolyn Weyforth, the Jonases’ traveling press secretary, said the boys understand the importance of keeping fans happy.
”They get it that they are here because of them,” Weyforth says. Still, she says, the group’s rise has been so meteoric that the intensity of their popularity is catching everyone by surprise.
”Just at the beginning of the tour they could go places sometimes” and not be recognized, Weyforth says. ”Now it’s just exploded.”
