Jennifer Lawrence thought she was done playing Mystique in the X-Men franchise until her pal Simon Kinberg signed on to direct the next installment of the franchise.
As part of their 2018 movie first look issue, Entertainment Weekly is sharing new details on X-Men: Dark Phoenix including the return of Lawrence as Mystique. After Apocalypse she was ready to hang up her blue skinned character mainly due to all the makeup she had to get into every day. She signed on for the next movie only because she ended up making a promise to Kinberg.
“I kind of f—ed myself,” Lawrence told EW. “Because when I was trying to talk Simon into directing, he said something like, ‘If I direct it, you have to do it,’ and I was like, ‘Of course! Duh!’ Then they offered me the movie, and I was like, ‘G–d—–!’” But she adds, “It was the fan base, though, too — the other reason was for the fans.”
So what can we expect from Mystique? According to Lawrence, her favorite incarnation of the character. “Acting-wise it was the best experience I’ve had [on these films]. He’s been writing these characters for so long and he knows them so deeply. I suddenly felt more connected to my character than I ever have been before.”
